Rodriguez suffered a dozen concussions in Afghanistan in 2006 and was eventually diagnosed with severe post-traumatic stress. He wore sunglasses for years to deal with light sensitivity and double vision, and self-treated with alcohol and pain medication. Prosthetic contact lenses corrected his vision, and counselling and physical activity contributed to his recovery.
